Initiating a Test-rig for the Measurement of Instantaneous Angular Speed (Torsional Vibrations)

This paper is about initiating a test-rig for the measurement of Instantaneous Angular Speed (IAS). The objective is to obtain torsional vibrations of a shaft for the purpose of some ongo-ing research. A bench grinder is modified for installation of a rotary encoder on an extended part mounted on its shaft. Challenges regarding this installation and solutions are discussed. The data acquisition system and the methodology to compute rotational frequency from the registered signals is then introduced. Through some tests, it is shown that the rig is capable of obtaining oscillations of the angular speed, or i.e. the torsional vibrations.
